From the First Letter of John:
How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help?
(From the Daily Office Lectionary – 1 John 3:17 (NRSV) – February 22, 2014.)
This, for me, is the issue of our day. It is the religious issue. It is the economic issue. It is the political issue. It is the moral issue. I think the answer to John’s question is, “It doesn’t.”
And anyone who claims to be Christian and yet supports policies that do not help those in need is not, in fact, a Christian.
Nor is such a person a moral or ethical person.
I cannot say anything more than that.
